YHA Christchurch is a homely, comfortable, 100 year old building with a friendly, modern atmosphere. This Gold 5 Star Qualmark-rated backpackers is located in the CBD near the Christchurch town centre, the Canterbury Museum, Art Centre, the Botanical Gardens and Hagley Park.

A wide range of comfortable backpacker accommodation is available including multi-share, female only, double, twin, and well-appointed ensuite rooms. YHA Christchurch also accommodates families and groups.

The kitchen is fully equipped with gas hob stoves and plenty of storage for your groceries. The communal lounge and dining is updated and modern and there is an outdoor garden and BBQ. Enjoy 2GB of free WiFi per day across the YHA network so you can stay connected to friends and family. Our friendly staff can assist with tips on what to see and do, and can even help you book any activities free of charge.

YHA Christchurch is superbly located for an easy walk to restaurants and bars on Victoria Street, Oxford Terrace, or New Regent Street. Explore Christchurch’s lively entertainment scene, pop up malls, markets, street art, and thriving community regeneration projects. It's the perfect home base to experience the growth and development in Christchurch's regenerating heart.

Shuttle/Bus:

Buses stop about 600m from the hostel. Most shuttles pick up at the hostel; please get in touch with hostel staff for advice or to book. The main Bus Interchange in Christchurch is approximately a 15 minute walk from the hostel, which provides an easy transport link to popular destinations including Sumner Beach and New Brighton.

Airport:

It is 8km from the Airport to the hostel. Taxis are readily available from the door of the terminal. Public buses depart from the terminal to the City Bus Interchange approximately every half hour during the day (once per hour on weekends); these accept cash, or have discounted fares for those with a Metrocard. Please see metroinfo.co.nz for up to date timetable and fare information. Note that the Central Bus Interchange is approximately a 15 minute walk from the hostel.

Shuttle options are available and hostel staff are happy to book these for you. We recommend Steve's Shuttle. Super-Shuttle also provides door to door transport and can be pre-booked via their website or by phone.

Train:

The Train Station is 4km from hostel. Transfer in taxi / shuttle is about NZ$10 to return from the train station.

Parking:

Please note there is no parking offered onsite. Street parking is available nearby and is free from 6pm until 9am. Please chat to our reception staff for their recommendations on the best available parking options.

Hostel capacity

YHA Christchurch can cater for up to 121 people across 41 rooms.

Room types available are:

  • 2 x 6 bed multi-share
  • 2 x 6 bed multi-share ensuite
  • 3 x 4 bed multi-share
  • 3 x 4 bed multi-share shower and basin ensuites
  • 2 x 4 bed multi-share ensuite
  • 18 x twin and double rooms
  • 2 x single rooms
  • 5 x twin and double rooms with ensuite facilities.
  • 1 x 3 person family rooms (1 x double + 1 x single bed)
  • 1 x 4 person family rooms (1 x double + 2 x single beds)

The hostel is spread over two floors with the majority of our multi-share rooms in one area on the first floor. All bedroom doors lock automatically when closed and require swipe keys for access. A duplicate set can be provided for leaders to access all rooms allocated to your group. 

A private group lounge and dining space may be offered to groups of 30 or more if requested.

Room types

Shared rooms

Group members are accommodated in comfortable 4 or 6 bed rooms and single unit bathroom facilities are situated in all areas of the hostel. All bedding is provided (duvets, sheets and pillows) and towels can be hired for $1 each.

Private rooms

Group leaders and supervisors can be accommodated in single, double or twin rooms with private or shared bathroom facilities. These rooms include all bed linen, towels and TV’s and ensuite rooms have tea and coffee making facilities.

Please note that we have a limited number of private rooms with ensuite facilities and they are subject to availability.

Meals

Continental breakfast can be served in our group kitchen upon request for $10 per person. It includes a choice of three cereals, yogurt, fruit, toast and spreads (butter, jam, honey and peanut butter), tea, coffee and fruit juice.

A packed lunch or onsite lunch and dinner options are also available upon request. 

FREE booking service

A free booking service is provided for all land-based domestic travel and activities including: Interislander and Bluebridge ferries, Tranzalpine, Tranzscenic and Overland trains, Intercity coach travel and local shuttle services.

Location

YHA Christchurch is a stone's throw from the Christchurch Botanic Gardens and Canterbury Museum and a short walk form the rejuvenating City Centre. the central location means Hagley Park and sports grounds, Willowbank wildlife reserve, Orana Wildlife Park, Ferrymead historic park and the International Antarctic Centre are easily accessible.

From Airport

Christchurch is Airport is 9km from the hostel. The most convenient option for Groups is to book a door to door shuttle. 

By Train

The train station is 4km from YHA Christchurch. Talk to your Groups Coordinator about arranging a shuttle. 

Car Parking

Unfortunately we do not have our own off-street car park. There is on-street car parking available outside the hostel.
