New Zealand is made up of two main islands from sub tropical north to temperate climate in the south. So pack for different weather, hot, cold, dry and wet.
You should also bring swimming clothes, sturdy footwear, sun hat(s), towel, a sense of humour and adventurous spirit.
All hostels have good laundry facilities and you have plenty of free time. You won't be judged for wearing the same outfit more than once during the trip.
YHA Tours are a fully inclusive tour and designed to be enjoyed from start to finish over 20 days.
We have secured a bed for you in our multishare rooms throughout the tour. These are in mostly small dorms of 4-6 beds per room.
However, it is possible to request an upgrade but we can't guarantee this will be available. Complete the Request an Upgrade form and we will check availability and get back to you.
Private rooms are in high demand and it is first come, first served, so it is best to put your requests in early.
There is an upgrade charge. If there are two of you travelling as a couple and you both want to share the private room, the upgrade charge will be halved.
Yes. The amount offered may vary from tour to tour. This will be visible when you go through the (very quick) availability check and booking process.
We are only running 16 tours from each departure point so spaces are limited. The earlier you book the better.
The 10% deposit is non-refundable but if you cancel 45 days before the departure date, and have paid in full, you will receive a refund of the balance.

Catering is minimal but yes we will advise the providers of your dietary requirements.
It is important you advise us of any allergies or medical conditions which may affect you during the trip. This is for your safety and makes sure our guides know what is happening should there be an emergency or adverse reaction.
YHA Tours are designed for travellers that are young of heart. To travel with us we require that you are at the minimum age limit of 18 years at time of travel.
If you have any concerns surrounding your age and whether or not our tours will be suitable for you, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will be more than happy to discuss your options.
A non-refundable deposit of 10% of the tour price is required upon booking confirmation, or full payment if the tour departure is within 45 days. The final balance is due 45 days (6 weeks) prior to tour departure.
If the final balance is not paid on the due date then the booking will be cancelled and the deposit forfeited.
Cancellation of a tour booking must be notified in writing and when this is received by YHA the following cancellation policy applies:
• 45+ days prior to departure date – 90% refund
• 14-44 days prior to departure date – 50% refund
• 14 days or less prior to departure date – No refund
• No Show – No refund.
In the unlikely event of YHA cancelling a tour before departure all payments made will be refunded in full. This will be the full extent of YHA’s liability. If you voluntarily leave a tour no refund will be provided for unused accommodation, transport, activities or additional services.
YHA reserves the right to make changes to itineraries or cancel any trip, including a guaranteed trip, at any time prior to departure if something beyond the control of YHA deems it necessary; including natural disasters, political instability, terrorism, weather, cultural conditions or other external events.
If YHA cancels a trip on which you are holding a fully paid booking you may choose between an alternative trip or a full refund. YHA does not hold responsibility for any related expenses that you may have incurred as a result of your booking such as visas, vaccinations, or non-refundable flights.

Accommodation while on tour also includes bed linen, a towel and breakfast. Please note that pre- and post accommodation does not include a towel or breakfast.
Optional activities can be booked with your guide.
Payment is direct with the activity concerned but your guide can help organise it for you. We take pride in the fact that our guides will help you experience the best of New Zealand and give advise but we don't 'sell' to you in order to earn commission.
Where possible we have also sourced the best possible price for activities and attractions. You are under no obligation to undertake any optional activity or book them through our guides or front desk.

Where possible we will assign you and your friend to the same shared dorm.
It is not guaranteed but we will do our best to keep you together.
The deposit is 10% of the tour price and is non-refundable.
This is because we incur costs for staff time, bookings and our own deposits on transport options which are non-refundable to us.
Some of our hostels do have female only dorms.
This can be requested but is not guaranteed throughout the tour. They are in high demand so if this is your preference we recommend letting us know very early.
Please note the night before your tour start is not included in the tour pricing.
You can either book this directly online via this site, or, let us know at the time of booking whether you require pre- or post accommodation and we can add this to your tour subject to availability.
We don't offer WiFi on the bus.
New Zealand has amazing landscape, and you spend a lot of money to get here so it's worth just staying in the moment and enjoying the experience.
We like staying connected with our friends and family as much as you do.
Lots of our hostels provide this service for free, while some of our more remote locations have a small charge for access (and our overnight boat cruise, YHA Bay of Islands the Rock doesn't get coverage at all, surprise surprise!).
Across the YHA-managed network you'll receive 5GB free WiFi per device per day, and can tap into another 1GB through the Spark network if you're one of their existing customers.
Please note this is across the YHA network - if you use all 5GB in the morning at one hostel, you won't have any left when you check into your next hostel that afternoon!

No you don't.
Becoming a member would be a good idea given the discounts on offer. Membership lasts a year and there are many non YHA discounts available at restaurants and activities.
