North Island

YHA Ahipara *

 

YHA Bay of Islands Paihia

 

YHA Whangarei

   

A five minute stroll from 90 mile beach, YHA Ahipara is the first stop on Te Araroa when travelling North to South. YHA Ahipara offers walkers great facilities and a range of accommodation including backpackers’ lodge, tent sites, cabins and a self-contained lodge. Dry out and store your gear while you refuel in the guest kitchen, make use of the laundry, check emails and trade travel stories beside the open fireplace or over board games and ping pong. 

Send your bounce box ahead or arrange to pick up extra supplies if you contact the hostel at least 48 hours ahead of arrival. When you’re ready to hit the trail again, staff can drop you off at Herekino Saddle for a small donation towards fuel. 
 

YHA Bay of Islands Paihia is ideal for Te Araroa walkers with a range of accommodation options from shared to private rooms, all ensuited. The hostel is 100m from the beach and a five minute walk to the Bay of Islands’ numerous water activities. Make the most of the hostel’s kitchen facilities to cook up a feed or ask staff for their favourite nearby restaurants. Wash your tramping clothes in the laundry facilities and then relax and unwind in the cosy lounge and outdoor area. Send your labelled bounce box ahead to collect upon arrival.

 

 

 

YHA Whangarei is perfectly situated for Te Araroa walkers and welcomes walkers to send their gear ahead to pick up. The hostel offers various room options including dorm and private cabins, with or without kitchenettes. Hang your gear to air out or dry out and then refresh and soak away the aches of the trail in the hostel’s hot tub or swimming pool.

When getting ready to hit the trail again, restock your supplies in Whangarei City, a 1.5km walk or a short bus ride away. Whangarei offers a range of outdoor supply shops, supermarkets, cafes, restaurants and bars.

YHA National Park 

   

YHAs Auckland City and Auckland International offer a great place to rest up in the first big city stop along Te Araroa. Make use of fully-equipped kitchens, dining rooms, TV rooms, sundecks, BBQ area and laundry. These YHAs can hold your mail for up to three months if you have booked a room, offer long term storage for just $10 per week and are staffed 24 hours. Stock up on groceries at the nearby supermarket or grab a packed breakfast at the hostel. The friendly staff will book your bus back into the wild.

 

Use the same hostel the folks building the nearby section of the Te Aroaroa Trail used. YHA Waitomo is an ideal stay less than one kilometre from the Mahoe Forest Track and one kilometre from Waitomo village.

Take in the stunning farm and native forest views. Relax and take a dip in the large swimming pool or swing in a hammock and unwind from your time on the trail. Send your mail or bounce box ahead or store extra luggage if you’re exploring the Waitomo area further. 

 

 

On the trail and under the shadow of three volcanoes, YHA National Park is well equipped for Te Araroa walkers. There's a drying room and plenty of storage for gear, a wood fire in the kitchen and an outdoor shop 700m away.

Wind down in the comfortable communal area with board games, movies or swap your book. Fuel up at one of the recommended local eateries before heading out again. Hostel transport to/from the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and Mt Ruapehu Whakapapa Ski Field is offered for a fee. Call ahead to let staff know your plans and they will hold incoming mail for you.

         

 

 YHA Ohakune

For those taking a modified route, YHA Ohakune is a 1906 historical villa located in the beautiful alpine town of Ohakune, adjacent to the world-renowned Tongariro National Park. Guests can restock gear and supplies in the village as well as either skip the river portion of Te Araroa or have a canoe company transport them from Ohakune to the start of the river section.

Or, give your feet a rest. YHA Ohakune rents and relocates bikes for the 30km portion of Te Araroa from Ohakune to Pipiriki and the 70km Whanganui River Road to Whanganui. Trailer and panniers are available for hire or the hostel will transport gear.

 YHA Ohakune has a drying room as well as gear storage.

 

 

Set amongst spacious sub-tropical gardens, YHA Whanganui is adjacent to the Whanganui River and is a restful and quiet hostel that feels more like a B & B. Choose either a private or multi-share room and cook up a feed and refuel in the large kitchen.

Relax in the comfortable lounge with TV, music centre, games, cards and a small library. The hostel offers in-house massage and Reiki healing treatments by appointment – great for those aches and pains of Te Araroa!

 

Celebrate completing the northern portion of Te Araroa at YHA Wellington, one of the most central hostels in the capital city. Te Papa and the waterfront are a five minute walk from the hostel, as is Courtenay Place, a hub of lively restaurants, cafes and bars.

Stock up on all essentials as you prep for the next half of your journey. There is large grocery store across the street and number of outdoor shops nearby. The 5 star hostel has an espresso bar selling barista made coffee, a selection of cabinet food and a $6 bagel breakfast.

Choose a multi-share or private room with or without ensuite.

YHA Hanmer Springs is the perfect place to divert from the trail and soak up the mountain atmosphere and soak in natural hot springs. The hostel is a 3 minute walk from Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa for relaxing tired muscles before getting out onto the trail again. YHA Hanmer Springs offers a range of accommodation from private ensuite to multi-share. Use the drying room for your gear, relax in the courtyard with a BBQ or spend those chillier nights in front of the log fire. 

 

Stay at YHA Arthur’s Pass, with great views and a small hostel feel.  Bag storage and a drying room for your wet gear are available. Choose from dorms to private rooms, self-contained units and two early 1900's Railway Cottages which have been comfortably converted with their own logburners. Ask the staff for instructions to the best spots to hear the Kiwi in the surrounding forests. 

 

Located on the glacier-fed Lake Tekapo lakefront, enjoy unobstructed views to the lake and mountains. YHA Lake Tekapo is close to the township and has great facilities. Fuel up in the guest kitchen, check emails, trade travel stories beside the fireplace in the large lounge and soak away aching muscles in nearby Tekapo Springs.

The hostel offers a range of accommodation from dorm to private rooms and tent sites. Staff are happy to forward mail to your next destination once you take up the trail again from Highway 8.

YHA Wanaka is in the stunning alpine village with uninterrupted views across Lake Wanaka. With a range of warm and comfortable accommodation, you can relax in a dorm or private room or in front of the hostel's large wood fire. The hostel also has a large drying room with lock-up and gear storage. A large grocery store is a 2 minute walk away. Send your bounce-box ahead and the hostel will hold it for your arrival and even collect your mail.

 

 

With two YHAs in Queenstown you can rest up or wind down after your tramp in a private or shared room, grab a hot shower, kick up your feet or cook up a storm in our well-equipped kitchens. YHA Queenstown Lakefront has a large drying room and storage lock-up while YHA Queenstown Central’s rooms all include ensuites and TVs. Talk to the hostel before you send your bounce-box ahead and they can hold it for your arrival. YHA Low Carbon Travellers are welcome.

Need something a bit extra to ease those aching muscles? Ask staff to book the nearby Onsen Hotpools that provide a free shuttle to/from central Queenstown upon request.

 

YHA Te Anau is a large, comfortable hostel designed for walkers. One block from the shores of Lake Te Anau and just off Te Anau’s main road, walkers can purchase hiking gear, groceries and local Fiordland cuisine. YHA Te Anau’s lovely lounge has a fireplace and plenty of couch space and there is a drying room and gear storage available. A range of accommodation options, from dorm to private, all have a unique homely atmosphere. Staff can even arrange a shuttle to the start of the next track.
