YHA Springfield, Smylies Accommodation is one of Springfield's oldest homes starting its history back in the 1870s as a guesthouse for the Bullock trains passing through. Set on just over one acre of grounds it offers plenty of space for rest and enjoyment and been extensively renovated with all modern backpacking facilities. Backpacker accommodation at YHA Springfield, Smylies Accommodation consists of twins, doubles and multi-share rooms, studio motel and a two bedroom family unit. YHA Springfield backpacker hostel has full recycling facilities to minimize our carbon footprint.
There is an extensive collection of English and Japanese books to be found on the bookshelves and in the TV lounge we have a good collection of videos and DVDs as well as broadband internet. Winter favourites at the YHA Springfield hostel include Japanese bath and kotatsu and skiers love the ski tune up room and drying room. YHA Springfield, Smylies Accommodation also has a popular Japanese restaurant on site.

From Christchurch airport pick-ups to sightseeing around the South Island we can offer a solution to your travel needs. We can advise on where to go bouldering around Castle Hill and have climbing mats for rental and a mini climbing wall to practise on. While reception is open between 8 am and 9pm, check-in at YHA Springfield is from 2pm – 9pm. Luggage storage is provided for guests arriving before 2pm.
For arrivals between 9pm and midnight, a surcharge may apply. Please contact the hostel directly if you will arrive after 9pm. A self-contained superking unit is used for these late check-ins to ensure hostel guests aren’t disrupted by guests arriving late.
If you are travelling by bus from Christchurch please take the West Coast Shuttle. They arrive in Springfield around 3.30pm, an ideal check-in time.

From Christchurch, when you see the Springfield sign start slowing down. 200m after the info sign you will see a big red sign with our name on it. From the West Coast, drive through the township past the shops and hall and you will see the red sign on your right. There is plenty of parking available onsite.
Please note: it's highly recommended to carry snow chains at all times in the winter months.

Christchurch International Airport is 65km or 40 min from us. The West Coast Shuttle can pick you up in the afternoon at 3.20pm (03)7680028, Smylies Shuttle anytime (booking advised @$50). If you leave by car, when you see the spitfire plane by the roundabout turn right, next traffic lights turn right and drive 60 km until Springfield.
A cosy hostel that caters for group size up to 30 in a mixture of dorms, triple and twins. Beyond 30 we have a 6 bed cottage and 2x studio motel units. We offer our winter groups our Japanese Ofuro (bath). We can cater all meals from our commercial kitchen at rates to suit the group budget.
YHA Smylies Springfield can cater for up to 30 people across 8 rooms for the hostel and 40 for hostel, studio units and cottage.

Please note that due to the layout of Smylies YHA we have 30 beds available in the main building along with all facilities, our cottage is situated east and the studio units west at a distance of 25m each from the hostel.
Our aim is to keep school groups together in the hostel part and give them the run of the house. Adult groups we tend to offer the mix of units and cottage for maximum benefits of private toilets and showers.
Group members are accommodated in comfortable 4 to 6 bed rooms. Shared bathroom facilities are situated in the hostel and private for the units.
All bedding is provided (duvets, sheets and pillows) and towels can be hired for $1 each.
Supervisors and tour leaders can be accommodated in single, double or twin rooms with private or shared bathroom facilities. These rooms include all bed linen and towels.
Please note that we have a limited number of private rooms with ensuite facilities and they are subject to availability.
Continental or Cooked breakfast can be served in our group dining room upon request for $10 to $17.50 per person. It includes a choice of cereals, yogurt, fruit, toast and spreads (butter, jam, honey and peanut butter), tea, coffee and fruit juice.
