Come and relax in the welcoming YHA Mt Cook after a busy day enjoying the majestic beauty of New Zealand's tallest mountain Aoraki Mt Cook. Spacious backpacker accommodation in rooms with wooden decor will ensure a good night's sleep in the natural surroundings of Aoraki Mount Cook.

YHA Mt Cook youth hostel, located in the centre of the South Island on the road between Queenstown and Christchurch, offers relaxed and homely accommodation with warm and inviting living areas with videos, games and a couple of guitars. Not only is there central heating throughout the backpacker hostel but also a cosy fire, extra heaters and a free sauna! In summer make use of the BBQ and picnic area outside and breathe in the pure New Zealand mountain air.

All local tour bookings can be arranged at YHA Mt Cook and the knowledgeable staff are happy to advise you on the best activities around Aoraki Mount Cook and the central South Island region.

The accommodation rates at YHA Mt Cook include $1 per night community levy to assist with Aoraki Mount Cook village development. The Mt Cook hostel staff work with the Department of Conservation (DOC) to help them preserve the Aoraki Mount Cook National Park for future generations.

Leave Highway 8 near Lake Pukaki and follow highway 80 towards the mountains. At Mt Cook Village turn left, you will see YHA Mt Cook on your left.

YHA Mt Cook, a Qualmark 4 star plus rated hostel in the heart of the Southern Alps.  We provide quality, secure, affordable accommodation.

We are especially lucky to be based in an area of fascinating geological and natural habitats and work in partnership with the LEOTC scheme to facilitate easy access to the National Park and surrounds.

YHA Mt Cook is committed to sustainable development in Mt Cook and there are recycling points located throughout the hostel. We ask our guests to be mindful of this and help YHA Mt Cook in our work to help preserve the environment.

Capacity and Room Types

YHA Mt Cook can cater for up to 75 people across 16 rooms.

Room types available are:

  • 5 x 8 bed multi-share
  • 1 x 7 bed multi-share
  • 2 x 4 bed multi-share
  • 8 x twin and double rooms

At YHA Mt Cook we can accommodate 75 students and faculty. Additionally, alongside our partners in Mt Cook Village, we can accommodate 150+ students and faculty.

The hostel has shared single sex bathroom facilities conveniently located near the bedrooms.

Group Breakfast

Continental breakfast can be provided upon request for $10 per person. It includes a choice of cereals, toast and spreads, tea, coffee or hot chocolate.

Free WiFi for Group Leaders

We know being a group leader is tough work at the best of times and you need to stay contactable as much as possible to keep things running smoothly. To help you stay connected YHA offers provides group leaders with free high speed WiFi during their stay.
