YHA Whitianga, On the Beach Backpackers is a friendly beachfront hostel with huge bay windows with stunning views over Mercury Bay, on the Coromandel Peninsula, a holiday spot loved by New Zealanders. YHA Whitianga has backpacker accommodation of multi-share rooms (some are en-suite) as well as double and twin rooms in self-contained units. Relax in our clean, comfortable home-like accommodation with all the necessary hostel facilities – well-equipped self catering kitchen, common areas and outside BBQ.

YHA Whitianga has two large dorms and several smaller units that are self-contained. These units have multi share style accommodation and private rooms for tour leaders/teachers. The hostel provides quality, secure and affordable accommodation for education, sports and tour groups. Please contact us to discuss your requirements before making a booking.

Capacity and Room Types

YHA Whitianga can cater for up to 70 people across 24 rooms.

Room types available are:

  • 1 x 12 bed multi-share
  • 1 x 10 bed multi-share
  • 7 x 4 bed multi-share
  • 1 x 1 single room multi-share
  • 5 x twin multi-share
  • 5 x double multi-share
  • 1x double self-contained with ensuite facilities
  • 2x self-contained family room
The accommodation

Please note that due to the layout of rooms, groups will be accommodated across the hostel in group units. All bedrooms require keys for access and a duplicate set can be provided for leaders to access all rooms allocated to your group.

Shared rooms

Group members are accommodated in comfortable 4 bed rooms, larger dorms if required.  Shared bathroom and kitchen facilities are situated in each group unit. All bedding is provided (duvets, sheets and pillows) and towels can be hired for $1 each.

Private rooms

Supervisors and tour leaders can be accommodated in single, double or twin rooms with shared bathroom facilities. These rooms include all bed linen and towels. Please note that we only have one private room with ensuite facilities and that is subject to availability.  Alternatively we have 3 fully self-contained units with a twin and a double room.

Group Breakfast

Continental breakfast can be served in our group kitchen upon request for $11 per person. It includes a choice of cereals, yogurt, fruit, toast and spreads (butter, jam, honey and peanut butter), tea, coffee and fruit juice.

Free WiFi for Group Leaders

We know being a group leader is tough work at the best of times and you need to stay contactable as much as possible to keep things running smoothly. To help you stay connected YHA Whitianga offers provides group leaders with free WiFi during their stay. 

Free Booking Service

A free booking service is provided for all boating and local activities in our area.  Spades for hot water beach are free for use.  Free Kayaks and boogie boards depending on weather conditions.  Bike hire available.
