The hostel is in easy walking distance to the bars, shops and theatres on Courtenay Place and close to Te Papa museum, Weta Cave Workshop, the waterfront and Embassy Theatre.

All 4 share ensuite rooms have lockers and if you prefer your own space we have twin, double and queen private rooms.

By Bus:

Intercity buses stop at the Railway Station – from here take Bus No 1 or 2 for $2 and get off at the last stop on Courtenay Place. Turn left onto Cambridge Tce. Hostel is 50m on left. Taxi is $10 - $12

From the airport:

7km Airport shuttles cost $20 to the door. Airbus 91 is $8.50 to Courtenay Place. Taxi is $25.

From the train station:

Monday Join a guided hike up to Mt. Victoria for 360-degree views of Wellington and the surrounding mountains.  Or join quiz night at a local pub and compete for great prizes. 
Tuesday Join a walking tour around the CBD.  Tuesday nights are movie nights in the hostel.  
Wednesday Get out and explore the harbour by kayak or climb the largest indoor real rock climbing wall.

Hostel capacity

YHA Wellington can cater for up to 300 people across 104 rooms.

Room types available are:

  • 1 x 8 bed multi-share
  • 11 x 6 bed multi-share
  • 2 x 6 bed multi-share ensuite
  • 1 x 4 bed multi-share
  • 21 x 4 bed multi-share ensuite
  • 5 x triple
  • 44 x twin and double rooms
  • 7 x single
  • 12 x twin and double rooms with ensuite facilities.

All bedroom doors lock automatically when closed and require swipe keys for access. A duplicate set can be provided for leaders to access all rooms allocated to your group. 

Please note that due to the layout of rooms, groups of 40 or more may be located on different levels.

Room types

Shared rooms

Group members are accommodated in comfortable 4 or 6 bed rooms. Shared single sex bathroom facilities are on each floor. However most share rooms have ensuite facilities.

All bedding is provided (duvets, sheets and pillows) and towels can be hired for $1 each.

Private rooms

Group leaders and supervisors can be accommodated in single, double or twin rooms with private or shared bathroom facilities. These rooms include all bed linen and towels.

Please note that we have a limited number of private rooms with ensuite facilities and they are subject to availability.

Continental breakfast can be served in our group kitchen upon request for $10 per person. It includes a choice of three cereals, yogurt, fruit, toast and spreads (butter, jam, honey and peanut butter), tea, coffee and fruit juice.

A packed lunch or onsite lunch and dinner options are also available upon request. 



FREE booking service

A free booking service is provided for all land-based domestic travel and activities including: Interislander and Bluebridge ferries, Tranzalpine, Tranzscenic and Overland trains, Intercity coach travel and local shuttle services.

YHA Wellington is the closest hostel to Te Papa, and within easy walking distance of Capital E, Civic Square, Parliament, National War Exhibition and transport to Zealandia and Wellington Zoo. A large Supermarket (New World) is directly across the road.

From Airport

Wellington Airport is 7km from the hostel. The most convenient option for Groups is to book a shuttle bus for $70 per van door-to-door. Alternatively the Airport Flyer bus (no. 91) is $9 per person to Courtenay Place and a taxi is approximately $30.

By Train

The railway station is 1.5km from YHA Wellington. It is a 20-25 minute walk, or you can take bus no. 1 or 2 and get off at the last stop on Courtney Place. Turn left onto Cambridge Terrace, the hostel is 50m on the left. A taxi would cost approximately $10-$15. Alternatively talk to your Groups Coordinator about arranging a shuttle. 

By Ferry

The Interislander ferry terminal is 3km from YHA Wellington. There is a shuttle to the railway station which costs $2.00 then follow the instructions as above. For larger groups we recommend booking a shuttle bus at $45 per van door to door, your groups Coordinator can arrange this for you. A taxi is approximately $15-$20. The Bluebridge ferry terminal is located opposite the railway station.  

Car Parking

When you arrive at YHA Wellington please feel free to use our loading bay (Between the lines) while you check in and we can advise you where to park. Unfortunately we do not have our own off-street car park. There is on-street car parking available an approximate ten minute walk from the hostel for about $7.50 per vehicle per day (Mon-Fri 10am -4pm) and free overnight and at the weekends. 

There is secure overnight parking (5pm -8am) at Te Papa, you can purchase a ticket at YHA Wellington reception for $6. 

Coach Parking

There are a number of parking options for buses bringing groups to YHA Wellington. The following areas have been allocated by Wellington City Council for bus parking. Parking is unrestricted and free of charge. For more information talk to your Groups Coordinator or call the council on +64 4 499 4444.

  • Wakefield St, opposite the Amora Hotel, capacity for 4 buses
  • West side of Kent Terrace, before Elizabeth St, capacity for 2 buses
  • Bunny St, between Thorndon & Lambton Quays, capacity for 4 buses
