YHA Opoutere is an historic converted schoolhouse overlooking a sheltered estuary on the Coromandel Peninsula, two hours north of Tauranga. Set in bush and gardens with great views over the estuary and to the ocean, this homely Opoutere hostel offers peaceful and tranquil accommodation in a relaxed Coromandel hideaway. 

YHA Opoutere is clean and comfortable. The large kitchen is well-equipped with plenty of fridge space for all to share. Other facilities include plug-in insect repellent, trampoline, badminton and volleyball.

Bus/Shuttle

Go Kiwi from Thames (2.30pm daily) and Whangamata Taxis can drop off at the hostel but must be booked in advance.

YHA Opoutere now caters for groups.

Wake up to birdsong in this off-the-beaten-track spot nestled between the estuary and bush-clad hills. The converted schoolhouse sleeps 45 guests across 6 buildings. Your group can explore this Coromandel getaway by kayak or foot. The hostel offers free use of kayaks to explore the sheltered estuary. Guests can take a 15 minute walk to the beach or up the Maungarauwahine Pa Hill which is accessible from the hostel. Or let your group unwind with badminton and volleyball. 

The rooms are multi-share style accommodation and private rooms are available for tour leaders/teachers. The hostel provides quality, secure and affordable accommodation for education, sports and tour groups. Please contact us to discuss your requirements before making a booking.

Capacity and Room Types

YHA Opoutere can cater for up to 45 people across 10 rooms.

Room types available are:

  • 1 x 6 bed multi-share

  • 1 x 4 bed multi-share
  • 1 x 1 twin and double room with ensuite facilities
  • 2 x 1 twin and double rooms
  • 1 x 2 double
  • 1 x 1 twin
The accommodation

Please note that due to the layout of rooms, groups of 20 or more must hire the whole hostel. Duplicate keys for all rooms allocated to your group can be provided to leaders.

Shared rooms

Group members are accommodated in comfortable 4 - 12 multi-share rooms. All bedding is provided (duvets, sheets and pillows) and towels can be hired for $1 each.

Private rooms

Supervisors and tour leaders can be accommodated in single, double or twin rooms. These rooms include all bed linen and towels. Please note that we have one private room with ensuite facilities and it is subject to availability.

Group Breakfast

Continental breakfast can be served upon request for $11 per person. It includes a choice of cereals, yogurt, fruit, toast and spreads (butter, jam, honey and peanut butter), tea, coffee and fruit juice.

Free WiFi for Group Leaders

We know being a group leader is tough work at the best of times and you need to stay contactable as much as possible to keep things running smoothly. To help you stay connected YHA provides group leaders with free high speed WiFi during their stay.

Free Booking Service

A free booking service is provided for all land-based domestic travel and activities including: Whangamata surf lessons, Hot Water Beach ferry from Whitianga to Cooks Beach, Cathedral Cove Shuttle Service.
