YHA Opoutere is an historic converted schoolhouse overlooking a sheltered estuary on the Coromandel Peninsula, two hours north of Tauranga. Set in bush and gardens with great views over the estuary and to the ocean, this homely Opoutere hostel offers peaceful and tranquil accommodation in a relaxed Coromandel hideaway. 

YHA Opoutere is clean and comfortable. The large kitchen is well-equipped with plenty of fridge space for all to share. Other facilities include plug-in insect repellent, trampoline, badminton and volleyball.

Relax and unwind in the unique and preserved environment that is Opoutere, a backpackers you won’t want to leave.

Please note: YHA Opoutere closes from Monday 1st May - Thursday 28th June 2017. Through winter months following these dates the hostel only takes bookings for Friday and Saturday nights. If you have an enquiry during these periods please get in touch with our Customer Service team.

YHA Opoutere now caters for groups! Wake up to birdsong in this off-the-beaten-track spot nestled between the estuary and bush-clad hills. This converted schoolhouse provides quality, secure and affordable accommodation for education, sports and tour groups. Hostel capacity

YHA Opoutere can cater for up to 36 people across 10 rooms.

Room types available are:

  • 1 x 12 bed multi-share
  • 1 x 6 bed multi-share
  • 1 x 5 bed multi-share
  • 1 x 4 bed multi-share
  • 2 x double + 2 bunk bed room
  • 1 x double + 2 single bed room with ensuite facilities
  • 1 x double rooms
  • 1 x 1 twin bed rooms

A duplicate set of keys can be provided for leaders to access all rooms allocated to your group.

Please note that due to the layout of rooms, groups of 20 or more must hire the whole hostel.

Room types

Shared rooms

Group members are accommodated in comfortable 4 - 12 bed multi-share rooms. 

All bedding is provided (duvets, sheets and pillows) and towels can be hired for $1 each.

Private rooms

Group leaders and supervisors can be accommodated in double or twin rooms. These rooms include all bed linen and towels.

Please note that we have limited rooms with ensuite facilities and they are subject to availability.

Meals

Continental breakfast can be served upon request for $11 per person. It includes a choice of cereals, yogurt, fruit, toast and spreads (butter, jam, honey, and peanut butter), tea, coffee, and fruit juice. 

 

 

 

FREE booking service

A free booking service is provided for all land-based domestic travel and activities including: Whangamata surf lessons, Hot Water Beach ferry from Whitianga to Cooks Beach, and Cathedral Cove Shuttle Services.

Location

YHA Opoutere is an off-the-beaten track location nestled between the estuary and bush-clad hills. Your group can explore this beautiful area on foot, or make use of the free kayaks offered by the hostel to navigate the sheltered estuary. The beach and Maungarauwahine Pa Hill are just a 15 minute walk from the hostel.

By Car

YHA Opoutere is located 16km north of Whangamata, 4kms from SH25. There is street parking available.

By Bus/Shuttle
