YHA New Plymouth Sunflower Lodge is a homely hostel nestled among native trees and bush. It is a lovingly restored boutique hostel, an ideal base to explore Mt Taranaki, Surf Highway 45, the Coastal Walkway, the Sunday Farmers’ Market and much more.

A wide range of comfortable backpacker accommodation is available including 4 share multi-share, female only, twin/triple, double and single rooms. YHA New Plymouth also accommodates families and groups.

The kitchen is fully equipped with a gas hob stove, large commercial oven, an instant hotwater zip and plenty of storage for your groceries. We also have an herb garden for cooking up Michelin quality meals, a scenic native garden and picnic area complete with outdoor BBQ. Plus we have some extra special add-ons such as Marvy, the resident Poodle cross hostel pup, a guitar, piano, and electric blankets and hot water bottles for those chillier winter nights. We even have free WiFi up to 2GB per day!

YHA New Plymouth is located next to the Te Henui Walkway for scenic bush views, native birdsong and the Te Henui River. The hostel is a 15 minute walk to the town centre and attractions including the award winning Coastal Walkway, Taranaki's favourite museum Puke Ariki, art galleries, shopping, cafes and bars. It is a short drive to Mount Taranaki.

By Bus

Intercity and Naked Bus drop off at the Travel Centre located on Ariki Street, behind the i-SITE and Puke Ariki museum. From there catch the local bus 7 to Coronation Avenue.  Press the bell to stop just after Bell Street and the bus will stop just past Timandra.  From there walk 400m down Timandra. We are at the end. This bus comes from town to the hostel approximately every hour, Monday-Friday.

Intercity and Naked Bus will drop off/pick up at Boys High School (NBH) which is a 700m walk to YHA New Plymouth. You must pre-book the High School drop off/pick up.


From The Airport

Airport Shuttles offer a door-to-door service for $20 per person each way. Ring them on 0800 373 001


From The CBD

Taxi fare from the CBD to YHA New Plymouth is approximately $10 - $12. It is about a 20 minute walk.


Parking

We have check in parking available for everyone, so you can come in and organise your bags with no hassles! We have limited availability for overnight car parking onsite so this is allocated on a needs basis i.e mobility issues, families will be prioritised. Please get in touch if you'd like to organise a car park. There is also plenty of parking available on the safe, no exit street we're located on.

YHA New Plymouth offers a friendly, peaceful and homely environment for groups visiting New Plymouth. We are a small hostel and can cater for many types of groups including hobby clubs, family reunions, national and international sports teams, school groups and many more! We have even hosted wedding receptions.

YHA New Plymouth facilities include YHA staples such as a range of 4-bed shared and private rooms, separate men’s and women’s showers with unlimited on-demand hot water, a communal kitchen (equipped with a gas hob stove, commercial oven and three large fridge/freezers suited to a group of up to 45, cutlery and appliances) open plan lounge and dining area. We also offer an herb and small veggie garden for cooking up Michelin quality meals, a scenic native garden and picnic area complete with outdoor BBQ. And we have some extra special add ons such free bike hire, tent sites, guitar, piano, complementary tea and sugar and electric blankets and hot water bottles for those chillier winter nights. 

Capacity and Room Types


YHA New Plymouth can cater for up to 45 guests across 14 rooms.

Shared rooms

Group members are accommodated in comfortable 5 or 4 bed rooms. The hostel has a range of  single sex, mixed and disabled bathroom facilities conveniently located close to the bedrooms. All bedding is provided (duvets, sheets and pillows) and towels can be hired for $1.

Private rooms

Supervisors and tour leaders can be accommodated in private rooms. These rooms include all bed linen and towels. 

Free WiFi for Group Leaders

We know being a group leader is tough work at the best of times and you need to stay contactable as much as possible to keep things running smoothly. To help you stay connected YHA offers provides group leaders with free high speed WiFi during their stay. 

Free Booking Service

A free booking service is provided for all land-based domestic travel and activities including: shuttle and guide to Mt Taranaki, surf board hire and lessons, stand up paddle board experiences, horse trekking, quad motor bike guided farm tours, historical settlers walking tour, fishing or Island Cruises to visit the seal colony and Forgotten World self-drive rail cart railway tours.
