YHA National Park Group Accommodation

YHA National Park is built around an indoor climbing hall and has great views of the 3 volcanoes right from the door step. Most rooms have ensuite bathrooms. We have 2 kitchens, a drying room and a bus for transfers to Tongariro Alpine Crossing, Whakapapa village and ski field, several mountain bike trails and other local locations.

Group breakfast

Continental breakfast can be booked in advance and served in our group kitchen for $11 per person. It includes:

  • A choice of cereals
  • Yoghurt
  • Fruit
  • Toast and spreads (butter, jam, honey, peanut butter)
  • Tea, coffee and fruit juice

WiFi/Internet

WiFi is $5 for 24 hours, internet kiosk $1 per 15 min. Group leaders will receive a 24 hours WiFi voucher free.

Bus transport

Tongariro Volcanic Adventures is our in-house bus service, with 5 buses (22-47 seats) and a 12 seater van available. All are fitted with snow chains or are 4WD. Group rates are available if you would like to book outside of the scheduled times below. Free guest pickup from Northern Explorer train and InterCity bus.

Scheduled departures:

  • Tongariro Alpine Crossing - daily at 7.15am, pick up at 4pm
  • Whakapapa village and ski field/Mt Ruapehu crater hike - departs 8.30am, pick up at 4pm

Indoor Rock Climbing Hall

Open daily 9am to 8pm. The hall is 8m high, has 30 top ropes, 55 different climbs in grades from 10 to 27, which suits beginners as well as advanced climbers. Gear hire available. Climbers under 13 years old need to bring adults for belaying. Prices vary based on climbers' ages, $9-$12 per person for group bookings.

How to get here

If you arrive in National Park from the south, take a left onto Findlay St. The hostel is a large alpine style building with solar panels on top. Free on-site parking available.


Bus
The InterCity bus stops at The Station Café, which is at the end of Findlay St. The bus driver can stop at the hostel if asked nicely.


Train

The railway station is at the end of Findlay St, 700m down the road to the hostel.

hostel capacity

YHA National Park can cater for up to 96 people in 22 rooms. Our group kitchen seats 25-30 people and our backpacker kitchen seats 30-40 people.

Shared rooms

  • 2 x 10 bed dorm rooms
  • 2 x 8 bed dorm rooms
  • 2 x 6 multishare rooms with ensuite
  • 1 x 5 multishare room with ensuite
  • 2 x 4 multishare rooms with ensuite
  • 2 x triple ensuite
  • 2 x queen triple ensuite

Group members are accommodated in spacious 8 to 10 bed dorm rooms with single sex bathroom facilities situated on the ground floor, or in 4 to 6 bed dorm rooms with ensuite shower/ toilet. Each of these rooms has 1 double bed and 3 to 5 single bunk beds, a table and chair. Rooms are split over two levels; all rooms have individual keys. All bedding is provided (duvets, sheets and pillows) and towels can be hired for $1 each.

Private rooms

  • 7 x double and twin rooms with ensuite
  • 2 x double and twin rooms with shared bathroom facilities

Supervisors and tour leaders can be accommodated in single, double or twin rooms with private or shared bathroom facilities. These rooms all include bed linen and towels.
