While we’ve evolved over time, our organisation remains true to the spirit in which it was founded over 85 years ago. We keep a strong values focus which underscores everything we do, and operate with a triple bottom line commitment to people, planet, and profit, to ensure we can keep providing awesome hostel facilities for another 85 years!
We’re New Zealand’s largest network of backpacker accommodation with over 35 hostels nationwide. We achieve this through a combination of YHA-managed hostels and partnerships with independently owned Associate hostels. We love that this makes us such a diverse network; we have everything from large fancy central city facilities, to eco retreats in the bush or cottages near the coast, all meting the quality standards of the YHA brand.
A Worldwide Network
YHA New Zealand is affiliated to Hostelling International (HI); which was founded in 1932 as the International Youth Hostel Federation. This means when you join YHA, you don't just become a New Zealand member - you get the benefits associated with more than 90 Youth Hostels Associations in over 80 countries, operating 4,000+ hostels!
The Chief Executive works closely with the team at YHA's National Office in Christchurch, including a Senior Leadership Team. Functions conducted centrally here include Finance, Operations and Property, Human Resources, ICT, Corporate Services, Marketing, and a national Customer Services team.
National Office supports and serves the YHA-managed hostels throughout the country, and provide assistance to our Franchise and Associate partners. A close working relationship between the Chief Executive and member-elected National Board provides guidance to the entire organisation.
Commitment to Quality
For YHA New Zealand, quality means delivering service and facilities at a consistently high standard that meets and ideally exceeds the expectations of our customers and colleagues.
To achieve this we employ comprehensive quality management systems and develop learning tools so everyone at YHA grows their knowledge and skills to improve our customer experience. We use New Zealand’s Qualmark and Hostelling International’s Quality assessment programmes to independently audit our systems and we review guests feedback on a daily basis.
Quality is not a tagline or an empty promise - it defines who we are and what we do.
Honouring Our Heritage
We honour Cora’s legacy not only through our work, but also with an award to support youth development.
Sustainability is built in to our operations from the ground up. Our managed hostels and National Office are all Toitū carbonzeroCertTM certified, reinforcing the strength of our commitment.
Our mission and values strongly underpin the way YHA operates on a day-to-day basis. We seek a strong values alignment in all our staff which reflects the principles-based leadership style adopted by our Senior Leadership Team.
