CEMARS

Certified Emissions Measurement and Reduction Scheme (CEMARS)

We are now in our third consecutive year of implementing CEMARS.  Manaaki Whenua/Landcare Research, CEMARS’ owner, continues to support our adoption of CEMARS.

YHA chose to implement CEMARS in order to bring an external viewpoint to our existing sustainability efforts. This gives credibility and assurance to our sustainability commitment. Although we work hard across the organisation to reduce our environmental impact, it is important to have an externally-based system which brings rigour and impartiality to how we judge our performance.

Living our Commitment - Carbon reduction plan

YHA has developed a carbon emission reduction plan which outlines projects intended to reduce energy expenditure and lower carbon emissions. YHA continues to maintain its long term focus on:

Solar Hot Water at YHA Nelson

We wanted to reduce the reliance on grid supplied electricity and reduce energy costs at the Nelson hostel so we have put in a solar hot water heating system to pre-heat the hot water. This project was supported by EECA.

Room Recycling at YHA Christchurch City Central and Rolleston House

We wanted to try and solve the problem of too much recyclable material ending up in rubbish and going to landfills so we decided to add recycling bins into each and every guest room to decrease our landfill output and increase our recycling.  This was so successful we have rolled this out across the network.

Water Reduction at YHA Auckland

We realised that our guests at this large inner-city Auckland hostel were using a lot of water which was costing the hostel an excessive amount per year so we installed water saving devices in all our toilets as well as low-flow shower heads in the bathrooms. Again this was so successful we have rolled it out across the network.
