Past Events:
Whangarei Members Event April 2012

In 2012 the Branch hosted a Members Weekend, which saw around 20 members from around the North Island come to stay at the hostel. All had a great weekend exploring the region. One of the members who attended from Auckland has written about his experiences. Click here to read about his weekend.

John Newman's Tree

The Branch planted a memorial kauri tree in the hostel gardens for John Newman. John was the Hostel Manager here from 1999 to 2007; sadly he passed away in July 2011.

Harry Guitry takes up the story:

"Jill Kerr set the date for the planting as 9 September at 5.30pm. I was quite worried about her choice of date and time as it clashed with TV coverage of the Rugby World Cup opening ceremony, however in the end the date and time could not have been better. This is because John loved rugby and indeed actively played Golden Oldie rugby for a local club right up until he became unwell. So it was fitting that we held a planting and remembrance celebration at dusk on the opening of the RWC in New Zealand, and it was a gorgeous evening as well.”
