Lance Kiddey - Honorary Life Membership
At the AGM, YHA takes the opportunity to recognise those who have made a contribution to the organisation and issues awards. Honorary Life Membership is the Association’s highest award. It is awarded to persons who have made an exceptional voluntary contribution to the Association. This contribution would generally be at a national level, for the benefit of the Association as a whole, and usually over an extended period of time. In 2011 Lance Kiddey was presented with this award. The following information was provided with his nomination.
Lance was an active Christchurch branch member for five years, organising trips and helping on work parties when in 1974 he and Christine moved to Invercargill and they joined the Southland Branch Committee.
In 1976 Lance took over as Branch Chair and is still in that role 35 years later. From 1979-81 Lance served on the National Executive and he has held a significant level of responsibility at Branch level as well. His major contribution at Te Anau was the landscaping of the grounds for the newly built second Te Anau YHA in 1977-78. As a very good handyman Lance kept an eye on the maintenance of Invercargill hostel. He built several easy chairs from kit sets to furnish the hostel lounge and these were still in use when the hostel was sold in 2002.
As a versatile fix-it man Lance was an asset on work parties and interior decorating at Anglem House on Stewart Island from 2002 to 2006 and with his practical skills, he worked out solutions to problems. Lance has had a very long involvement and commitment to Southland Branch as a Branch Representative on Region 4 Council for many years as well as being a Southland Representative at national annual meetings. His loyal service was recognised by the award of a Certificate of Merit in 1985. 26 years later, Lance is continuing a leading role on the committee of Southland Branch in loyal support of YHA New Zealand.

YHA AGM in Dunedin
Branch members were well represented at the AGM held in Dunedin in November 2011. During the weekend they took the opportunity to fundraise for the Stewart Island Project by selling raffle tickets and raised $50 for this project. Well done!
Branch members joined together to celebrate Christmas with a two course buffet dinner at the Invercargill Working Men's Club at the beginning of December. The meal was excellent, and conversation flowed with nobody in a hurry to go home. This was a great opportunity for members to enjoy each other's company and share YHA experiences.
