Whether you’re visiting to experience the golden beaches of the Abel Tasman National Park or planning to spend time in the vibrant, cosmopolitan township of Motueka, YHA Motueka the Laughing Kiwi offers a welcome place to relax and kick off your shoes. This comfortable backpacker hostel has a choice of accommodation options, free WiFi and an enticing spa pool.

With three separate houses and a maximum of only forty guests on site, even in peak season, there is plenty of space for everybody, especially when it comes to cooking a meal and relaxing after the day’s activities. Each house has its own homely lounge, well equipped kitchen and unlimited hot showers. All bedrooms have heaters and all beds have hotel quality sheets and warm comfortable duvets.

YHA Motueka the Laughing Kiwi, located on the western shore of the Tasman Bay is on New Zealand’s South Island and is a short drive to the Abel Tasman and Kahurangi National Park. The hostel is also only a two minute walk to the supermarket, shops and cafes.

A large carpark is provided for off street parking at the rear of the property.

Our friendly and knowledgeable staff can help you book walking and kayaking trips into the Abel Tasman. Most companies provide a free pick up service from outside our reception.

Location

YHA Motueka the Laughing Kiwi backpacker hostel in Motueka is only a 50 minute drive from Nelson, 3 hours from Picton or just over 3 hours from Westport.
Centrally located between Nelson and Golden Bay, an ideal accommodation base to explore the Abel Tasman National Park and experience all that this area has to offer.

By Car

A 50 minute drive from Nelson. Follow SH60 to Motueka. Continue along SH60/High Street. The hostel is located on the left hand side at 310 High Street, just past the Avalon Manor Motel and 200m before McDonalds/KFC.
 
From Hanmer Springs/Westcoast
On arriving in Motueka, continue along College Street & King Edward Street. At the junction by the Clock Tower, turn left onto High Street.
 

By Bus/Shuttle

Buses from Picton, Nelson, Golden Bay. The main bus stop is just a short walk away in Wallace Street, by the informaton centre. Sometimes, by prior arrangement, the driver is able to stop outside the hostel door.

  • Whether you have just a few hours or a few days, there are many walking and hiking options to choose from.
  • Kayak the cystal clear waters and explore the spectacular coastline with the chance of seeing fur seals, dolphins or the shy little blue penguin.
  • Water taxis based at Marahau and Kaiteriteri provide scheduled year-round services allowing you to combine a scenic cuise and walk option.
  • Enjoy a full day sailing, or combine with a kayaking or walking option.
  • Enjoy a horseback ride along Marahau’s golden sandy beaches or through native bush and farm land.
  • If you are an active person and are ready to have fun to be challenged, try canyoning! October to end of April.
  • See the Abel Tasman from a different angle and enjoy some air activities.
