Located right on the Lake Tekapo lakefront with unobstructed views to the mountains beyond, the million-dollar view from the YHA Lake Tekapo backpacker hostel is of the incredible shades of blue of this glacier fed lake in the centre of the South Island of New Zealand.

YHA Lake Tekapo’s large lounge area directly overlooks the lake and is a comfortable and cosy retreat. In winter relax in front of the roaring log fire or take turns making music on the piano or guitar.

The backpacker accommodation available at the Lake Tekapo hostel is family-friendly (a cot is available) and has disabled facilities. The large kitchen is very well-equipped including a rice cooker, panini toaster and free herbs and spices.

SH8 from Queenstown - Turn left towards the Spa and Hot Springs and then immediately right into the gravelled YHA carpark
SH8 from Christchurch - Drive through the village past the 2 petrol stations then turn right towards the Spa and Hot Springs and then immediately right into the gravelled YHA carpark.

Please note: it's highly recommended to carry snow chains at all times in the winter months.

By Bus/Shuttle

If your driver drops you off in the village, face the lake and turn left - crossing the car park to a stony walkway - follow this for 1 minute until you reach the YHA.

YHA Lake Tekapo is a small and friendly hostel with plenty of history and character. Located on the shores of Lake Tekapo with undisturbed views over to the Southern Alps. Tekapo is located 3 hours south of Christchurch and 3 ½ north of Queenstown, making it the perfect location as a stopover to break up the journey.

YHA Lake Tekapo is just a 2 minute walk from the town centre, complete with a small supermarket and wonderful choice of restaurants. Activities in the area include skiing in winter, outdoor hot pools, ice skating (winter), roller blading (summer) spa and horse trekking.

Capacity and Room Types

YHA Lake Tekapo can cater for up to 30 people across 8 rooms.

  • 3 x twin and double rooms

Shared rooms

Group members are accommodated in comfortable 4 - 7 bed rooms. The hostel has shared single sex bathroom facilities conveniently located to the bedrooms.

All bedding is provided (duvets, sheets and pillows), and towels can be hired for $1.

Private rooms

Supervisors and tour leaders can be accommodated in double or twin rooms. These rooms include all bed linen and towels. 

Free WiFi for Group Leaders

We know being a group leader is tough work at the best of times and you need to stay contactable as much as possible to keep things running smoothly. To help you stay connected YHA offers provides group leaders with free high speed WiFi during their stay.

A free booking service is provided for all land-based domestic travel and activities including: Interislander and Bluebridge ferries, Tranzalpine, Tranzscenic and Overland trains, Intercity coach travel and local shuttle services.
