YHA Kinloch, Glenorchy, located in Kinloch, is a lakeside wilderness lodge located on New Zealand's South Island, a stones throw from the Routeburn and Greenstone tracks. Within easy reach of Queenstown and a 5 minute boat ride or 26km scenic drive from Glenorchy, the backpackers offer bunkrooms to double room accommodation. You can self cater or enjoy a meal in our restaurant, and spend the days trekking, fishing, jetboating, horse-trekking, or simply enjoying the magnificent natural surroundings.

The backpackers comfortable Wilderness bunk rooms are the ideal accommodation choice for trampers, families, and those whose prime purpose is to enjoy the outdoors. With fully made up bunks with hot water bottles and spare blankets for the cooler winter nights, heaters, power outlets, sofas, mirrors, and storage what more can a backpacker ask for in this superb location.

About Glenorchy

Glenorchy is located on the South Island of New Zealand at the head of Lake Wakatipu, 45 kilometres due north of Queenstown. Glenorchy is surrounded by mountains in every direction: the Humbolt range to the west and the Richardson range to the east, the stunning view up the Dart River is to the north, adjacent to solitary Mt. Alfred. YHA Kinloch, Glenorchy sits on the lakefront. Mt. Aspiring National Park begins close by, just before the start of the Routeburn track and the start/finish of the Greenstone/Caples tracks is just 12 km down the road.

By Car:

The hostel is 1 ¼ hours drive from central Queenstown. Follow the road to Glenorchy and then the signs to Kinloch, a further 26kms. The last 9kms are unsealed but the road is suitable for all vehicle types. Car parking is available.

By Bus/Shuttle:

A shuttle service operates twice daily (8am and 12.15pm) from the centre of Queenstown during the trekking season – end Oct – end April. Please contact us for out of season transport options.

Kinloch lodge is situated on the edge of the lake 1 ¼ hours drive from Queenstown mid way between the Routeburn and Greenstone walking tracks. We are the perfect base for all things outdoors – hiking, field trips, biking, kayaking, fishing & bonfires!

Kinloch Lodge has been providing excellent hospitality since 1868 and the current owners, John & Toni Glover have 14 years experience of organising group functions – from family get togethers, educational groups, study or business retreats to birthdays, weddings and staff social functions.

Capacity and Room Types

YHA Glenorchy Kinloch Lodge can cater for up to 50 people across 19 rooms.

Room types available are:

  • 4 x 4 bed multi-share
  • 3 x 3 bed multi-share
  • 11 x twin and double rooms
  • 1 double room with ensuite facilities.
The accommodation

We have a range of different room types from double / twin to 4 share and will work with you to allocate rooms to match the group make up. We have excellent self catering facilities, tv room, full laundry, boot drying facility and Wifi throughout.

Shared rooms

Group members are accommodated in comfortable 2 -4 bed rooms. Shared bathroom facilities are located centrally to the rooms All bedding is provided (duvets, sheets and pillows and towels)

Private rooms

Supervisors and tour leaders can be accommodated in single, double or twin rooms with private or shared bathroom facilities. These rooms include all bed linen and towels.

Group Dining

Kinloch Lodge has a restaurant on site and can cater for any of your groups’ needs – breakfast, lunch, dinner, packed lunch at affordable prices.

Free WiFi for Group Leaders

We know being a group leader is tough work at the best of times and you need to stay contactable as much as possible to keep things running smoothly. To help you stay connected YHA offers provides group leaders with free high speed WiFi during their stay.
