With the West Coast rainforest right outside the backdoor, YHA Franz Josef is a high quality hostel offering comfortable and modern backpacker accommodation. YHA Franz Josef is the perfect hostel to take in the sights of the magnificent Fox and Franz Josef glaciers on the South Island’s wild and wonderful West Coast. 

Nestled into a stunning backdrop of rainforest and mountain views, YHA Franz Josef offers backpacker accommodation comprising of shared, double, twin (some with ensuite bathrooms) and family rooms. YHA Franz Josef hostel facilities include a spacious fully equipped kitchen, TV lounge with Sky TV, flat screen TV and free DVDs, open plan lounge/dining room with piano and open fire, bike storage, laundry/drying room, pool table, picnic area, BBQ, travel desk, wireless internet and a FREE sauna!

YHA Franz Josef has a limited number of camping sites available throughout the year. Please phone the hostel direct to determine availability and price. (Please note, these sites are suitable for 1-2 man tents only.)

This hostel has some pretty special extras: FREE popcorn anytime! And FREE vegetarian soup from 6-8pm (until 31 October 2016).

By Car:

The hostel is at the south end of Cron Street which is one street off the main road. From the village turn by the petrol station onto Condon Street. Turn right on to Cron and the hostel is at the end of the road on the left. Car parking is available.

By Bus/Shuttle:

All the major transport companies stop at our front door. They will pick up here as well upon request.

By Plane:

The nearest airport is in Hokitika which is about 2 hour’s drive north of Franz Josef. Flights are available into Hokitika from Christchurch daily. Car rentals are available in Hokitika. There is no scheduled public transportation from the airport.

By Train:

The Tranz Alpine travels from Christchurch to Greymouth daily. Daily bus service meets the train and arrives in Franz Josef late in the afternoon.

  • Hike on one of the only glaciers to exist in a rainforest setting, the Franz Josef Glacier. Take a short trip down the West Coast to hike the Fox Glacier too.
  • Fly up and away on a magnificent helicopter flight over the glaciers or try heli-hiking; quad biking; horseback riding or kayaking on a pristine West Coast river.
  • Soak your cares away in Franz Josef’s Glacier Hot Pools, thermal pools in a rainforest setting.
  • Look for the rare white herons at nearby Okarito Lagoon and take picture perfect mirror image photos at the lakes of Mapourika and Matheson.

YHA Franz Josef is in one of the world’s most beautiful National Parks, YHA Franz Josef is the perfect location for those wanting to explore the glaciers, rainforest or rivers. The hostel is located in the center of the township with easy access to all that Franz Josef and the West Coast has to offer.

Hostel capacity

YHA Franz Josef can cater for up to 110 people across 39 rooms.

  • 9 x twin and double rooms with ensuite facilities

 

 

Room types

Shared rooms

Group members are accommodated in comfortable 4 - 6 bed rooms. Shared single sex bathroom facilities are conveniently located near the bedrooms. All bedding is provided (duvets, sheets and pillows) and towels can be hired for $1.

Private rooms

Group leaders and supervisors can be accommodated in double or twin rooms with private or shared bathroom facilities. These rooms include all bed linen and towels. 

Please note that we have a limited number of private rooms with ensuite facilities and they are subject to availability.

Meals

Continental breakfast can be served in our group kitchen upon request for $10 per person. It includes a choice of three cereals, fruit, toast and spreads, tea, coffee and fruit juice.

A free booking service is provided for all land-based domestic travel and activities including: Interislander and Bluebridge ferries, Tranzalpine, Tranzscenic and Overland trains, Intercity coach travel and local shuttle services.

Location

Nestled against the backdrop of the West Coast Rainforest YHA Franz Josef is the perfect base for groups to explore and discover the magnificent Fox and Franz Josef Galciers or the go Kiwi Spotting on Okarito Lagoon.

By Car

By Plane

The nearest airport is in Hokitika which is approximately 2 hours drive north of Franz Josef. Flights are available into Hokitika from Christchurch daily. Car rentals are available in Hokitika. There is no scheduled bus service from the airport but talk to your Groups Coordinator about arranging a shuttle/bus for you. 

By Train

The Tranz Alpine travels from Christchurch to Greymouth daily. A daily bus service meets the train and arrives in Franz Josef late in the afternoon. Alternatively talk to your Groups Coordinator about organising your own private transport. 

Car Parking

The hostel has free off street parking for cars and vans. 

Coach Parking

There is free bus parking about a 10 minute walk from the hostel. There is also bus parking available for $10 per night at the community hall opposite the hostel.
