Description

YHA Taupo is centrally located with just a 5 minute walk to the Taupo town centre and the lakefront. Lake Taupo is New Zealand’s largest lake, situated in the adventurous Central North Island region, half way between Auckland and Wellington. Rafting, skydiving and the world famous Tongariro Crossing are just some reasons to come and stay at YHA Taupo.

YHA Taupo consists of double, twin and multi-share backpacker accommodation in the main building and a fully self-contained lodge which is perfect for group accommodation. Some of the private rooms have ensuite bathrooms. The grounds around YHA Taupo have tent site accommodation, a BBQ picnic area, a clothesline as well as hammocks in the garden.

Relax on the large deck with mountain and lake views. Get to know other backpackers over a game of volleyball or table tennis. YHA Taupo also has a classic video library in its cosy lounge and WiFi internet access for those days when you just want to take it easy. By bus

The bus stop is outside the i-SITE on Tongaririo Street which is about 800 metres to YHA Taupo.

From Tongariro Street, turn right on Horomatangi Street, then left on Kaimanawa street. We are located on the corner on the Kaimanawa and Tamamutu Streets. 

From the airport

There is no bus or shuttle service from the airport. Hire a taxi for the 7 kilometre journey. Prices vary.

  • The Lake Taupo region is part of the Taupo Volcanic Zone and Thermal Explorer Highway. Within this area you’ll see spectacular steaming cliffs, geysers, boiling lakes, bubbling mud pools and floating rocks called pumice

YHA Taupo has a separate building that can be reserved exclusively for your group, accommodating up to 30 people.

Capacity and Room Types

YHA Taupo can cater for up to 105 people across 29 rooms.

Room types available are:

  • 1 x 8 bed multi-share
  • 3 x 8 bed multi-share ensuite
  • 2 x 5 bed multi-share
  • 7 x 4 bed multi-share
  • 1 x 4 bed multi-share ensuite
  • 1 x triple
  • 11 x twin and double rooms
  • 1 x single
  • 2 x double rooms with ensuite facilities.

The accommodation

YHA Taupo has a separate lodge from the main hostel which sleeps up to 30 and can be hired exclusively for your group. The main hostel has 4 - 8 bed shared rooms and double, twin and single private rooms, some with ensuite facilities.

The hostel has shared single sex bathroom facilities conveniently located close to the bedrooms.

Group Breakfast

Continental breakfast can be provided upon request for $10 per person. It includes a choice of cereals, yoghurt, fruit, toast and spreads, tea, coffee and juice.

Free WiFi for Group Leaders

We know being a group leader is tough work at the best of times and you need to stay contactable as much as possible to keep things running smoothly. To help you stay connected YHA offers provides group leaders with free high speed WiFi during their stay.  

Free Booking Service

A free booking service is provided for all land-based domestic travel and activities including: Interislander and Bluebridge ferries, Tranzalpine, Tranzscenic and Overland trains, Intercity coach travel and local shuttle services.
