Description

YHA Ohakune Station Lodge is a 1906 historical villa located in the beautiful alpine town of Ohakune, adjacent to the world-renowned Tongariro National Park. A place for all seasons, the backpacker lodge is warm and inviting and is in close proximity to spectacular walks, ski fields and the mighty Whanganui River. YHA Ohakune backpacker hostel has been lovingly restored yet retains its unique and historical character. Guests enjoy the use of extensive facilities including shared and private rooms, full kitchen amenities, two lounges, fireplace, central heating and a hot spa pool (in winter). YHA Ohakune offers a complete all year round experience in an affordable and stunning environment. 

In winter guests return from their day’s skiing or other seasonal activities to the warmth of a roaring fire and all the comforts of home. During the brilliant Central Plateau summers, the scene shifts to outdoor pursuits and the outdoor woodfire pizza oven is fired up. Guests can enjoy friendly games of cricket or simply relax on the verandas overlooking the peaceful native gardens, while taking in the views of Mt Ruapehu.

YHA Ohakune has its own onsite ski and board rental shop as well as mountain bike rental, making it convenient to explore the local trails. The hostel is on the doorstep of the ‘Mountains to Sea’ Cycleway and is situated at the start of the Ohakune ‘Old Coach Road’.

From the airport by car

Rotorua - 2.5 hours. Follow SH5 heading to Taupo, SH1 to Turangi, from here you can either take SH1 via the Desert road to Waioura, then turn right onto SH 49  OR SH47 to National Park Village and then SH4 to Ohakune. 

Palmerston north - 2 hours by car. SH3 to Bulls, Then link up with SH1 to Waioura, turn left onto SH49 to Ohakune.

The volcanoes of the Tongariro National Park, UNESCO World Heritage Areas, Mt Ruapehu, Mt Ngauruhoe, and Mt Tongariro, offer outdoor enthusiasts a playground of activities all within stones throw from YHA Ohakune, Station Lodge. 
•      The National Park is the snow sports mecca of the North, offering two ski fields, Turoa & Whakapapa and a club field on the Eastern slopes of the mountain - Tukino.
•      For trampers, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and Lake Surprise  is a must!  The Ohakune Mountain Road also offers a variety of short and long walks, with a highlight being the  Waitonga Falls Track, Tongariro National Park’s highest accessible waterfall
•     We are lucky to have two Great Walks in the region, so be sure to checkout the Whanganui Journey and the Tongariro Northern Circuit
•     For mountain bikers, the Ohakune Old Coach Rd  &  the Mangapurua/Bridge to Nowhere Track should not be missed; you will not be disappointed!!  The Mountains to Sea cycleway also starts from Ohakune, which is an excellent multi day cycle.
•      Canoe or Jet Boat the Whanganui River, ( 3 & 5 day packages can be arranged from YHA Ohakune)
•      If you're a big fan of the Lord of the Rings  and The Hobbit; An Unexpected Journey, then maybe you want to take in some of the filming locations; Middle Earth and Mount Doom.
•      You can fish all year round for trout in the mighty Tongariro River
•      Ohakune plays host to the annual “Ohakune Mardi Gras” festival, which kicks off the start of the ski season.
