The original backpacker accommodation for groups
YHA New Zealand was established in 1932 in part to cater for the burgeoning demand from tramping clubs, cycling groups and schools requiring accommodation both within towns and further off the beaten track. Since then our mission has remained effectively unchanged.
Our network of hostels is ideal for groups of all types. We provide unmatched budget accommodation in the most diverse locations, including the best activity and educational centres in New Zealand.
We make your group travel easy and convenient with a range of services and hostels throughout New Zealand. Our dedicated Groups Coordinators will offer you a free booking service for all land-based domestic travel including: Interislander and Bluebridge ferries, Tranzalpine, Coastal Pacific and Northern Explorer trains, Intercity coach travel and local shuttle services. Together with our partners, YHA New Zealand can also organize your meals and activities. Just tell us what you need and we’ll do our best to facilitate your stay. All bedding is provided (duvets, sheets and pillows), free of charge, and towels can be hired for $1 each.
In New Zealand, we consider a group to have a minimum of 10 members. However, please feel free to discuss your group accommodation needs, whether you’re a string quartet or rugby squad, we will be happy to accommodate you.

YHA's commitment to your group
When you arrive at your YHA hostel the Hostel Manager will be your first point of contact to ensure your requirements are met and that you have an enjoyable stay.
- Upon arrival your group will receive a welcome explaining the safety procedures and hostel rules
- You will be allocated separate group bedrooms and will not be expected to share with other guests who are not in your group. Tour leader rooms will be allocated as close to the group as possible
- YHA staff are trained and capable of handling emergency situations and 80% of our frontline staff have full Red Cross First Aid training
- YHA will take all reasonable precautions to ensure the safety and security of your group and their property
- A member of staff will be available 24 hours a day and can be called upon to help with an emergency
- The main entrance is locked at night and only guests with keys/code can access the building
Each hostel has a range of accommodation options available to your group, from shared to private rooms. As a group you can be allocated dedicated bedrooms if you prefer not to share with other guests. If your group comprises children under 18 years old, they will be roomed together and not share with other travellers. (There may be a small charge for either of these options.) We will endeavour to provide separate leader and driver rooms, depending on the hostel size and room availability at the time of booking. These rooms will be located as close as possible to the group to facilitate effective supervision.
YHA hostels offer excellent self catering facilities, the kitchens are fully equipped with all cutlery, crockery and utensils. This is very cost effective allowing you to tailor your menus exactly to your needs and budget. Some hostels offer continental breakfast options. Should you have any special catering requirements, our hostel managers will be happy to discuss and arrange this with you.
A continental breakfast can be arranged upon request for $10 per person at YHAs Franz Josef, Queenstown Lakefront, Auckland International, Wanaka, Te Anau, Wellington, Mt Cook, Taupo and Nelson. The breakfast includes a choice of cereals, fruit, toast and spreads, tea, coffee and fruit juice. Gluten free and dairy free options are available upon request. YHA Rotorua charge $12 per person.
You don't have to be a member to bring your group to YHA New Zealand. We welcome groups of all sizes and for all reasons, sports groups, schools groups, arts groups and even small business conferences.
YHA Endorsed Group status is useful for groups wanting to travel overseas as some countries require Group membership status and is issued on an annual basis. This is available to any bona-fide New Zealand based organisation; participants must be New Zealand residents. New Zealand Hostels don't require this to stay at NZ YHA's. To be considered as a group, there must be 10 or more members travelling. All group members are covered by a single group membership. Use this form to gain YHA Endorsed Group Membership.
Free WiFi for Group Leaders
We know being a group leader is tough work at the best of times and you need to stay contactable as much as possible to keep things running smoothly. To help you stay connected YHA offers provides group leaders with free high speed WiFi during their stay.
If you are looking for a more exclusive experience for your group, we also offer the opportunity to book the whole hostel for the sole use of you and the members of your party. We will be happy to discuss the options available to you and your group – freephone (within NZ) 0800 278 299.
