YHA New Zealand Member Weekend - an Opoutere Retreat

Less than two hours from Auckland, Hamilton or Tauranga, is YHA Opoutere, a historic converted schoolhouse set in bush and gardens with great views over the estuary and to the ocean.

Whether you choose to take part in the organised activities or do your own thing, you’ll find plenty to do. Activities in the local area include swimming, kayaking, fishing, snorkelling, biking, and walking to name just a few, and of course Whitianga is less than an hour’s drive away.

Why not explore the area on foot. There are numerous walks which are suitable for all levels of fitness. Tairua Harbour has one of the best short walks on the Coromandel. After just a 15 min walk to the summit of Mt Paku you’ll be rewarded with views of Tairua Habour both Tairua and Pauanui beaches as well as 4 nearby islands.

Hot Water Beach is a truly unique Kiwi experience that all should experience at least once in their lifetime. For two hours either side of low tide you can dig in the sand for hot spring water and make your own spa pool.

Accessible only on foot or by boat, the famous Cathedral Cove is one of the "must visit" sites on the Coromandel Peninsula. The track begins at the northern end of Hahei.

Why not visit the Te Whanganui-A-Hei Marine Reserve on a Glass Bottom Boat Tour and explore the wonderful marine wildlife on a unique Eco-adventure. Mercury Bay Seafaris have offered members a 40% discount on this tour. Usually $85 now just $50 per person (minimum numbers required). This tour leaves from Whitianga harbour at 10.30am on Saturday. A snorkelling trail has also been set up to encourage swimmers to explore the marine life.

If all that sounds a little too energetic you could relax at the hostel, take a stroll through the onsite garden walkway or head to the beach.

In fact there is so much to see and do in this area why not extend your stay and really explore this beautiful piece of paradise.
