YHA Stewart Island

Relax in the rugged wilderness of Stewart Island and watch Kiwi and Tui’s wandering around as you unwind in our welcoming hostel. The Stewart Island hostel is a warm, cosy two-bedroomed house, with a single apartment underneath. All linens, laundry, kitchen equipment is provided. The hostel is only a 5 minute walk to shops and wharf. Bookings for this self-contained hostel must be made via YHA Te Anau on 03 249 7847

We do not have staff on-site. Once you have made your booking the hostel caretaker will be notified and will come and meet you from your ferry or flight.

Stewart Island ‘the land of the glowing skies’ is home to Rakiura World Heritage Park and the land of many New Zealand Bird species such as Kiwi, Weka, Kaka, Tui some of which can be found flying directly in front of the YHA Hostel.

Top activities to do while backpacking in Stewart Island:

  • Night kiwi spotting
  • Take part in some of the rugged walks around the island, with 245km of walking tracks, Stewart Island is a popular venue for Trampers.
  • Take a boat trip around the Bays and to Ulva Island, a nature reserve criss-crossed with trails and home to abundant and extremely tame birdlife.
  • Go diving and explore the weird and wonderful marine life

There are daily flights from Invercargill to Stewart Island which take 20 minutes. The airstrip is 1 km from Anglem House.

The ferry from Bluff takes 1 hour and Anglem House is a 5 minute walk from the wharf.
