About Westport

The wild and wonderful 'West Coast' is a must-see for all backpackers visiting New Zealand, and Westport is considered to be the West Coast’s Adventure Capital.

Surrounded by national parks Westport is an excellent base for trying a multitude of extreme activities: white water rafting, blackwater rafting (underground!), surfing, jet boating, abseiling, mountain biking and jet skiing.

For something a bit more sedate but delicious go trout fishing or whitebaiting (in season) on the beautiful, broad Buller River which flows right through Westport. The local Westport coastline is perfect for on shore line fishing for snapper. Then you can take all your succulent fish back to the YHA Westport hostel to cook up a feast.

Nature loving backpackers enjoy horse riding along the West Coast beaches and taking a trip to the seal colony at Cape Foulwind near Westport. Other popular attractions include the famous Carter Beach Golf Course and the Denniston Incline, a great modern wonder of engineering.
Westport has a little bit of everything – give yourself enough time to enjoy all the many wild West Coast activities while enjoying your New Zealand adventure.
