About Twizel
Twizel, surrounded by mountains in the middle of the South Island’s Southern Alps, is the best service town for exploring the breathtaking alpine Mackenzie basin.
Twizel is just a short drive to Mount Cook (Aoraki) – New Zealand’s highest mountain - and to the picturesque lakes of Tekapo and Pukaki. Near Twizel you can find the world’s rarest wading bird, the Black Stilt, salmon farms and many beautiful walks. Hire a mountain bike or bring your own and go ‘off-road’ amongst the Southern Alps. In summer you can try river swimming and in winter go skiing at Ohau or Tekapo skifields. Ohau Skifield has recently spent several million dollars upgrading its facilities.
There are plenty of fish to be caught in Lake Benmore and other local lakes and rivers, the rowing is excellent at Lake Ruataniwha and the wind conditions at Omarama mean the gliding is world famous. If gliding’s too sedate for you take a helicopter flight with a snow landing onto one of the many mountains near Twizel or visit the Pelennor Battlefields from the Lord of the Rings.
If all of these great Mackensie basin activities tire you out then take some time to just relax and unwind on one of the sunny decks at the YHA Twizel hostel or stroll down the road to tempt your taste buds in one of Twizel’s cafes, bars or restaurants.
