About Hamilton

Hamilton’s beautiful riverside location is only one and a half hours drive from Auckland and Rotorua. The town has developed along the banks of the New Zealand’s longest river, and has become the region's farming, educational and entertainment hub.

City attractions include the Waikato University, Hamilton gardens and Hamilton Zoo, not to mention special events such as the V8 Super Cars and the Hot Air Ballooning Festival.

YHA Hamilton’s close proximity to the river provides access to many leisure activities from cruises and jet boat rides to walks along the river.

Hamilton airport is just 15 kilometres south of the city centre, and is served by all major destinations in New Zealand and several Australian cities.

As the hub of the central north island, visitors to Hamilton have easy access to iconic attractions such as Waitomo Caves, Raglan’s surf coast and the historic Te Aroha Mineral Pools.

Top activities to do while backpacking in Hamilton:

  • River cruise or walk the river
  • Hot air ballooning
  • Visit Hamilton Zoo, home to over 600 New Zealand and exotic animals
  • Experience the popular club and bar scene
  • An easy drive to Waitomo Caves and black water rafting
