About Wellington

You have to do and be, not simply watch or even describe. This is the city of action, the world headquarters of the verb!

Be part of the buzz of New Zealand’s intimate and vibrant cultural capital, Wellington city. Nestled amongst steep hills at the southern end of the North Island offering fantastic sea views, and hugging one of the most picturesque harbours in the world, Wellington has more cafés per capita than New York, and a thriving art and music scene.

New Zealand’s national museum Te Papa is only the beginning of your adventure, take a Lord of The Rings tour (the production of the Lord of the Rings trilogy was based in Wellington), visit seals and penguins in the wild, take the famous red cable car to the Botanical Gardens, or climb Mt Victoria for breathtaking views over Wellington harbour. The YHA Wellington City hostel supports the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary, which is now one of the best places in New Zealand to experience native wildlife in their natural environment, even though it’s just minutes from downtown Wellington.

Then relax and play in one of Wellington’s many cafes, restaurants, bars and clubs. You’ll need more than just a fleeting glimpse of our little gem, Wellington. Stay a while, you won’t regret it!

Top activities to do while backpacking in Wellington:

  • Visit Te Papa national museum on the refurbished Wellington waterfront to learn all about Maori and New Zealand arts and culture.
  • Take a Lord of the Rings tour – either to the studio or to one of the many locations in and around Wellington.
  • Discover some of New Zealand's rarest wildlife at ZEALANDIA: The Karori Sanctuary Experience, Wellington's award-winning conservation safe haven.
  • Take a ride on the cable car for amazing views over Wellington Harbour.

Brilliant location. It's very central, next to the theatres, Te Papa Museum, a 5 minute walk to the beach, 15 minutes to the foot of Mount Victoria and next to the some great restaurants. It's near the main bus route leading to the railway station. The vibe is good, the guests and staff are friendly and the hostel is very well organised, clean and efficient.

HostelWorld.com, 1 February 2009

The helpfulness of the staff was incredible. They seriously are the friendliest people, and a great help to us during our stay there.

HostelBookers, 9 January 2009

The City YHA in Wellington is huge - six floors with dorms and rooms of all sizes. It's also very modern, clean and in a great location, and offers everything a backpacker's heart could desire. I stayed there for a week before moving into university accomodation, and I liked it so much that I returned several times to have the staff at reception help me plan trips around the islands...

TripAdvisor, 2 November 2008

This is the best hostel I have stayed in over the last three months, it is more like a hotel. It is very clean with two kitchens with everything you need in them. A huge tv room and very good location.

HostelWorld, 26 December 2008

The atmosphere in YHA, I GIVE A BIG 10 STARS! the Kitchen is big enough to move about in and they had a nice lazy-boy massage chair :-) Mixed aged group from school kiddes to senior citzens, WOW! A big star.

HostelWorld.com 24 May 2008

The staff here were really friendly and we liked the fact that they encouraged recycling. It had a huge kitchen and was right opposite a supermarket, which was great. Also liked the reading/meeting room! Good location too, would definately stay again.
