YHA Turangi, Habitat Backpackers is situated just 100m from the centre of Turangi, a town on the banks of the Tongariro River near the southern shores of Lake Taupo in Central North Island. YHA Turangi’s accommodation is set within 9.5 acres of park-like surroundings and has two spa pools for guest use.
At YHA Turangi, Habitat Backpackers we offer a wide range of hostel accommodation including multi-share bunk rooms, twins and doubles. Each room has its own basin, heating system and bed linen is provided. The cosy backpacker cabins (twin, double or triple) offer full cooking facilities, dining table, colour TV (with Sky), coffee making facilities and shared bathrooms with linen/towels supplied. The Turangi hostel also has many acres of flat manicured lawns for tent sites.
The excellent Brew Haus Restaurant and Bar are on site at YHA Turangi, but if you prefer to make your own meals we have a well-equipped and warm communal kitchen, a great place to meet fellow backpackers over a cup of coffee.
YHA Turangi, Habitat Backpackers has hostel accommodation just a short 20 minute drive from Whakapapa ski field on Mount Ruapehu, the largest ski field in New Zealand and we have on-site ski hire to save you time. But in the summer, or if the ski areas are closed due to bad weather, you are close to many more great activities around the Turangi, Central North Island area. The Turangi hostel staff are happy to assist you to book ski passes, rafting tours, horse trekking or advise you on where to go trout fishing.

Turangi is the ideal base for excursions into the Tongariro National Park, Kaimanawa Forest Park, Pureroa Forest Park as well as being only a 20 minute drive to the Whakapapa ski area on Mt Ruapehu, New Zealand’s largest ski field. Several small picturesque lakeside settlements of Kuratau, Omori, Pukawa and Whareroa are close by and historic Tokaanu is well worth a visit with its natural thermal pools and power station.
Walk the Tongariro Crossing or go sightseeing on Mt Ruapehu volcano to experience the spectacular views of the central plateau; see emerald and blue lakes within 500 metres of each other and a truly lunar like landscape. It’s actually possible to see all of this in just one day, although we’d recommend you stay at the YHA Turangi a bit longer than that to really get the most out of the Turangi, Tongariro region.
