About Thames
Thames is a great location for exploring the Coromandel and Waikato region, some of the most scenic locations in New Zealand. Thames is the entry point for one of the best kept secrets of the Coromandel Forest Park—Kauaeranga Valley. This previously volcanic area with kauri logging history has 22 different tracks to choose from, ranging from 10 minutes to two days. YHA Thames Sunkist International Backpackers operate a daily shuttle into the Pinnacles. Adventurous backpackers should try New Zealand’s most extreme canyoning with a 70m waterfall abseil at the Sleeping God Canyon, also in Kauaeranga Valley.
In Thames itself explore museums, the waterfront, the Grahamstown goldmine, butterfly farm, or enjoy a ride around town on one of the hostel’s free bikes.
