YHA Te Aroha

YHA Te Aroha is one of the original YHA New Zealand hostels, a cosy century-old cottage in the spa town of Te Aroha in the Thames Valley, just two hours drive from Auckland. The Te Aroha backpacker hostel is located at the top of Te Aroha town with great views, fabulous sunsets and a lovely garden filled with native kanuka trees, frequently visited by New Zealand birds - tuis, wood pigeons and warblers. The Te Aroha hostel is ideal backpacker accommodation for unwinding or escaping the crowded cities with its cosy rooms, garden hammocks and rural bush setting.

We have free bikes for exploring Te Aroha’s mountain bike tracks and also immediate access to a large number of stunning bush walks. Herbs and spices are provided in the kitchen for creative cooking and games, books, CDs and a guitar are free to use in the lounge areas of the hostel. Helen and Dannie warmly welcome you to their truly unique hostel in the charming rural town of Te Aroha.

"(YHA Te Aroha) is one of the oldest and simplest hostels in New Zealand, about ten minutes' walk from the visitor centre … on the lower slopes of Mount Te Aroha, with some lovely views and free bike use." - The Rough Guide to New Zealand 2006

"(YHA Te Aroha) is an unusual but long-running hostel… a cosy, TV-free, three-bedroom cottage with a homely atmosphere and welcoming management.” - Lonely Planet New Zealand 2006

Special features at YHA Te Aroha that backpackers love:

  • Cosy cottage backpacker accommodation in one of the original YHA New Zealand hostels.
  • View over the charming town of Te Aroha, with fabulous sunsets each night.
  • Lovely gardens with hammocks, native trees and native birds.

About Te Aroha

Te Aroha is a little gem of a town, situated in the Thames Valley of New Zealand’s North Island. This picturesque Edwardian spa town is nestled at the base of Mt Te Aroha - the ‘Mountain of Love’ according to Maori legend. Te Aroha is famous for its hot mineral soda water spas, massages, free Hot Soda Water Footpool and the Mokena Geyser, the world’s only hot soda geyser. You can find all of these as well as surviving Edwardian buildings in The Domain of Te Aroha. In Te Aroha town you can visit the oldest pipe organ in the Southern Hemisphere, play a round of golf, fish for trout or go shopping for arts and crafts from the many original artists now residing in Te Aroha.

The Te Aroha hostel is the closest backpackers to the magical location for Hobbiton from The Lord of the Ring films. Other great places to explore in the area around Te Aroha include The Wairongomai Valley, The Wairere Falls and the Karangahake Gorge. These places offer beautiful hiking trails and glimpses into New Zealand’s fascinating goldmining history. There is also a wide variety of tramping options accessible from the YHA Te Aroha hostel, including a climb to the summit of Mt Te Aroha for fantastic 360 degree views. At only a short 2-3 hour drive from Auckland, why wouldn’t you come to stay at Te Aroha.

Top activities to do while backpacking in Te Aroha

  • Step back in time and ‘take the waters’ at the refurbished Edwardian hot mineral soda water spas of Te Aroha, but watch out for the Mokena Geyser!
  • Pretend you are a hobbit while visiting nearby Hobbiton of the Lord of the Rings.
  • Explore nature and history combined at the Wairongomai Valley, the Karangahake Gorge or the Wairere Falls.
  • Hit the Te Aroha arts and crafts trail for some retail therapy.
  • Eat a gourmet Swiss sausage from the Little Boys sausage factory at Te Aroha West!
