About Ohakune

Ohakune is the southern gateway to the North Island's volcanic plateau, an adventure backpacker’s playground!  Located at the foot of Mt Ruapehu, one of New Zealand’s most iconic volcanoes, you don’t need to walk very far around Ohakune to enjoy dramatic scenic views.

Try a variety of summer alpine walks including the full day famous Tongariro Crossing, the scenic 2 hour Blyth Hut walk or you could take on the amazing 4 day circumnavigation of Mt Ruapehu. Walk amongst this alien land with its solid lava flows, red volcanic ash and deep blue acid crater lakes - the filming location for Mordor in The Lord of the Rings. Other first-rate activities around Ohakune include canoeing down the secluded Whanganui River or skiing at Turoa and Whakapapa ski areas in winter.

And don’t forget to check out Ohakune’s famous giant carrot in the centre of town, celebrating Ohakune’s many market gardens and fresh produce. And in winter the Ohakune nightlife really comes alive. In summer Ohakune is quieter but it is a great time to explore all the trails on foot, on mountain bike or by horse.

Matai was very cosy, and I loved the rustic appeal. The staff were friendly and it was good value for money. Their in house mountain shuttles were also very convenient!
