YHA National Park, National Park Backpackers

Please note that there is a two night minimum stay policy over the weekends during the ski season.

The YHA National Park hostel is the closest backpackers to the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing, New Zealand’s National Parks of Tongariro and Whanganui and dual World Heritage area. With magnificent views of the volcanoes right from the doorstep, the National Park hostel accommodation ranges from budget backpacker beds to private ensuite rooms. Other facilities include a fully equipped kitchen, BBQ area, outdoor spa pool, internet access and a laundry and drying room which is especially useful after tackling the Tongariro Crossing or a hard day’s skiing at Mt Ruapehu.

There is a friendly, social environment at the YHA National Park Backpackers which is partly due to the fact that the hostel has been built around a challenging 8 metre high indoor climbing wall! Open daily with 55 different climbs, gear hire and free instruction, you must give this climbing wall a try while staying at YHA National Park.  There is a bar/restaurant just next door and other amenities like ski hire, postal services and takeaways are a short walking distance from the National Park hostel.

The National Park hostel is a booking agent and pick up point for the Tongariro Crossing shuttle, Whanganui River trip and Mt Ruapehu skifield shuttles in winter. At YHA National Park Backpackers we will endeavour to service your every need and if we don't have it, our hostel staff will point you in the right direction!

Special features at YHA National Park that backpackers love:

  • Closest hostel to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing with shuttle service direct from the hostel.
  • You'll love YHA National Park hostel’s climbing wall - just for fun or to challenge your strength and skill and to keep the kids (not to mention the adults) amused.
  • Fully equipped kitchen with microwave, oven, plenty of cooking space and a complete range of utensils and other equipment.
  • Relax in front of the wood fire or watch a movie after a full day of activity on the Tongariro Crossing or at the Whakapapa or Turoa skifields.
  • Daily snow reports in winter and tonnes of local knowledge from the hostel staff, especially Tom.

About National Park

National Park Village, in the shadow of the magnificent North Island mountains of Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe, is the gateway to the Tongariro and Whanganui National Parks. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is often described as one of the best one-day tramps in New Zealand, with its unique combination of pretty alpine fields and spectacular volcanic scenery, culminating in the summit of Mt Tongariro at nearly 2000m above sea level. The YHA National Park hostel provides transport to Tongariro Crossing summer and winter.

National Park is also a great base for exploring the spiritual and remote Whanganui River, considered a wilderness haven for a unique type of adventure. Taking a 1-5 day Whanganui River experience by canoe allows you to totally cut yourself off from the rest of the world.

Other trips and actitivities that can be booked from the National Park Backpackers include the Mt. Ruapehu Crater Climb, mountain biking, fishing, hiking, volcanic tours and of course, skiing trips to nearby Whakapapa  or Turoa ski fields. National Park really is the backpacking adventure playground of New Zealand.

Top activities to do while backpacking in National Park

  • Walk one of New Zealand’s best one-day hikes – the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.
  • Have a Whanganui River Experience and discover why the Maori hold this river so sacred.
  • Go skiing at the North Island’s best ski fields on nearby Mt Ruapehu – Whakapapa or Turoa.
  • Try some other outdoor activities like mountain biking, fishing, volcano exploration or, if the weather isn’t great, climb the wall at YHA National Park hostel.
