About Gisborne
Sometimes called the City of Rivers with three rivers converging in the centre, Gisborne is a charming, sunny place to hang out and is the perfect base for trips to the untouched East Cape with its traditional Maori culture and idyllic beaches at Maihia and beyond. Gisborne itself has some of the best beaches in the country and the area is renowned for its surfing. Close to town check out white sand Waikanae and Wainui beaches. Important to the history of New Zealand, sights not to be missed in Gisborne include Kaiti Hill, Cooks Landing, Te Poho-O-Rawiri Marae and museum. Travelling a bit further from Gisborne visit Lake Waikaremoana, Morere Hot Springs, Mahia Peninsula, the East Cape Lighthouse and Mount Hikurangi, a mountain sacred to Māori.
A day in Gisborne could start with an early trip to Wainui beach to be one of the first in the world to see the new sunrise, then a climb up Kaiti Hill gives stunning views over Gisborne and Poverty Bay. After braving the sharks in the afternoon, why not end your day relaxing in the warm evening sun with a bottle of one of the superb wines from the Gisborne region.
