About Ahipara

Experience New Zealand’s ‘Winterless North’ at the small sheltered village of Ahipara, found at the southern end of Ninety Mile Beach in the beautiful Far North of the North Island. The YHA Ahipara hostel itself is only five minutes walk from Ninety Mile Beach and just 15 minutes drive from Kaitaia, the main base town for activities in the Far North.

Keep yourself entertained with fishing and surfing at the closeby beaches of Reef Point and Shipwreck Bay or go quad biking, blo-kart riding or sandboarding along the wilderness of Ninety Mile Beach.  Or if you want to just take it easy then Ahipara is the perfect place for walking, swimming, touring the Ahipara Gumfields, playing a round of golf at the Kaitaia Links Golf Course, watching the sun set or just getting away from it all…

Day trips to Cape Reinga, at the northern top of New Zealand, can be organised from the YHA Ahipara hostel. Cape Reinga, a spiritual place for Maori, is known for its stunning views over the whirling meeting point of the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean. Day trips to Doubtless Bay, Hokianga Harbour (via the Rawene Ferry) or Karikari Peninsula can also be booked from YHA Ahipara backpackers.

Top activities to do while backpacking in Ahipara

  • Take a trip to Cape Reinga at the northern tip of New Zealand for one of the most stunning sea views in New Zealand.
  • Have an adventure on Ninety Mile Beach – try quad biking, sand boarding, bio-karting, surf-casting, horse trekking or a 4WD tour.
  • Experience Ahipara’s past with a fascinating tour of the Gumfields.
  • Go surfing at Reef Point or Shipwreck Bay or just relax on the sand and watch the beautiful sun sets.
